“Cole asks us to traverse into the beautiful unknown and question our notions of “otherness”

JOANNA COLE is an Australian born visual artist based in Gadigal Country, New South Wales, Australia.
Cole paints the human condition through the lens of the landscape. With a medative and responsive practice around themes of travel and environmental concerns Joanna Cole takes hue, line and the historical materiality of oil paint through a rhizomatic production to bring a collection of works to a singular moment of clarity.
Cole sees the art process as a becoming free of the learned as a way to express and connect with land and community in a new creativity.
With relevance and respect to a timeline of thought, technical, manual, experimental markmaking and playfulness she provides detachment to the physical in order to touch on the essence of an almost intangible yet communal thought.
The final painting bridges connection through emotion and the story of place.
Joanna Cole is represented in NSW by Brenda Colahan Fine Arts.
